“Well,” Allen sighed, “how did that conversation go?”

“Pretty much like you’d expect.”

“I’m guessing since you are not being led away in handcuffs again that you didn’t hit him or piss on the man.”

“It was hard.” Nathan conceded the urge was there. “I really wanted to. I mean, I really wanted to.”

“I didn’t see him myself,” Allen started, “but I’m not surprised he was here. There is a major conference in town this week and he does know pretty much everyone on staff here.”

“Yeah, so he told me.” Nathan groaned.

“Forget about it.” Allen could see the encounter had left Nathan out of sorts. “We both know the man is an insufferable ass, but unlike you, the rest of us at least respect his reputation and influence enough to keep those opinions to ourselves. Nobody wants what happened to you to happen to them.”

“Whatever,” Nathan finally did shake it off and got back to the reason he had come in the first place. “Listen, I was trying to track you down today to let you know everything is ready and I was looking to leave by the end of the week. You still good? You still coming?”

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Allen smiled, though not entirely convincing as his eyes still scanned the area for Kern. He looked…uneasy. Nervous.
